The best flower food for cut flowers is a commercial sachet used at the dose printed on the packet. It works because it combines three things: a sugar to feed the bloom, an acidifier to lower water pH so stems drink more easily, and a mild biocide to stop bacteria from blocking the stem. That is the short answer. The rest is worth reading, because most people either skip the sachet or use it wrong — and because the internet is full of vase tricks that sound charming and do very little.

What does flower food actually do?

A cut stem has lost its roots. It can no longer draw water and sugars up from soil, so everything it needs for the next week has to come from the few centimetres of water sitting in your vase. Flower food is not fertiliser in the garden sense. It is a life-support mix that solves three separate problems at once.

For most people, yes — not because the chemistry is exotic, but because the ratios are already balanced and pre-measured for a standard vase. You cannot easily over-acidify or over-bleach a vase when the dose is done for you. Commercial sachets are also formulated to dissolve cleanly and to work with the volume of water a typical bouquet needs.

Where sachets go wrong is in how they get used. Underdosing is the common failure: people top up the water without adding more food, the mix gets diluted, and the biocide stops working first. The other failure is simpler — the packet never gets opened at all.

If you have run out, a homemade mix is a reasonable substitute. It is not a downgrade in principle, only in precision.

How do you make flower food at home?

Here is a workable ratio. Treat these as approximate guidance rather than lab measurements; vase water is forgiving within a reasonable range.

Per 1 litre (about 1 quart) of cool water:

  1. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Plain white granulated sugar is fine. Stir until fully dissolved before the flowers go in.
  2. Add 2 teaspoons of lemon or lime juice. Fresh or bottled both work. This is your acidifier.
  3. Add a few drops of household bleach — roughly 1/4 teaspoon, and no more than about 1 teaspoon per litre even for a large vase. This is your biocide.
  4. Stir thoroughly, then add your trimmed stems.
  5. Rebuild the mix from scratch every time you change the water, rather than topping up.

A note on the bleach, because it matters: keep the amount small. Too much will scorch stems and leaf edges, and you will see the damage as browning at the waterline. If you are unsure, err low — a slightly under-dosed vase still beats a burned one. And keep the bottle, the mixed water, and the flowers themselves out of reach of pets and small children. If you would rather not handle bleach at all, use clear (not diet, not cola) lemon-lime soda instead — about one part soda to three parts water. The soda supplies both the sugar and the citric acid, so you still want a very small amount of bleach for the biocide, or a commitment to changing the water daily instead.

Does the DIY penny, aspirin, or vodka trick work?

These come up constantly, so here is an honest read on each.

Copper pennies. The theory is that copper acts as a fungicide. The problem is dosage: a coin releases a negligible amount of copper, and most modern pennies are copper-plated zinc anyway. No meaningful evidence supports it. Skip it.

Aspirin. The idea has more logic behind it than the penny — salicylic acid does lower water pH, and there is real plant-science interest in salicylates. But a dissolved tablet is a weak and inconsistent acidifier, and it does nothing about bacteria. Lemon juice does the acidifying job better and cheaper.

Vodka. A tiny amount of alcohol may slow ethylene production, which is the gas that ages flowers. In practice the amounts people add are either too small to matter or high enough to damage stem tissue. It is an interesting idea that does not translate well to a kitchen vase.

Soda. This one is partly real. Clear lemon-lime soda genuinely provides sugar and citric acid, which is two of the three functions. Diet soda does not (no sugar), and dark colas are not a useful substitute.

The pattern is worth noticing: the tricks that do a little something are the ones that happen to hit one of the three functions. None of them cover all three, which is why none of them outperform a proper mix.

How often should you change the water?

Every two days is a good default, and immediately if the water looks cloudy or smells off. Cloudy water means the biocide has been overwhelmed, and no amount of topping up will fix it.

The full water change is a small routine:

  1. Empty the vase completely and rinse it — do not just add fresh water to old.
  2. Wash the vase with warm soapy water every second or third change; a bacterial film survives a rinse.
  3. Re-trim about a centimetre off each stem at an angle before returning it.
  4. Mix fresh flower food into the new water.

That re-trim is not optional. Stems seal themselves at the cut over time, and a vase full of perfect water does nothing if the flowers cannot drink it. Does flower food work for every flower?

Mostly, with a couple of sensible exceptions.

Bulb flowers — tulips, daffodils, hyacinths — generally do not need the sugar, and many florists give them plain cold water with just a biocide. Daffodils also leak a sap that harms other stems, so give them their own vase for the first day. Woody stems like lilac, hydrangea, and flowering branches drink slowly and benefit more from a good cut and warm water at the start than from a rich sugar solution.
